STUDENT ACTIVITIES
YEARBOOK
Students are given the opportunity to apply to be on yearbook staff during the school year (usually around the time of Fall Break). On the applications, students are asked a variety of questions designed to determine strengths they have that will coincide with characteristics necessary for a good staff member. (These include language arts skills, interest in/love of photography, artistic talent, being detail oriented, being responsible, pride in/love of SVMS, availability before school or during homeroom times, etc.) On the application, students are also required to obtain a recommendation from an SVMS teacher. Mrs. Spangler, yearbook sponsor, determines the yearbook staff.
Upon acceptance, yearbook staff members may take pictures at sporting events or other extra-curricular activities. Members help promote yearbook sales. Yearbook staff members also help determine the basic layout of the book and vote for the best cover design/theme from student submissions.
Yearbook staff is a place for students who may not be involved in may other activities to shine. We typically do not place more than 20 students on our yearbook staff. We have meetings throughout the school year, but the bulk of the work is done during homeroom time. A big part of creating the yearbook involves identification of students and checking for spelling errors!
STUDENT COUNCIL
Student Council is a student service organization for 6th, 7th, and 8th and grade students. Applications are accepted in the spring for membership for the following school year. Sixth grade students will apply in the fall of their 6th grade year. In order to be accepted in Student Council, students must fill out an application and have parental consent.
Student Council focuses on supporting the needs of our students. We provide dances, work the concession stand, purchase needed items for students such as winter accessories and school supplies, and raise money to support different needs of the students. Student Council creates an awareness of community needs by requiring ten hours of community service from each member.
Student Council sponsors are Mrs. McLain and Mrs. Johnson
